2007 Warfield Lectures - Lecture VI: “Workings of the Spirit”

Chris has posted his summary and comments of the sixth and final Warfield lecture, “Workings of the Spirit.” Here Tanner offers an extension of what she began in her second lecture on grace and nature. She speaks historically of two camps regarding the workings of the Spirit: one that views the Spirit as functioning immediately and individually, and another that views the Spirit working through messy, mediated, human forms. In the end, she leans toward the latter, but recognizes that the two lead to dangerous extremes—enthusiasm in the former, institutionalism in the latter—so a kind of dialectical tension is necessary.
