Update: While this post went up, I was actually watching Wall-E in the theater. I hope to say something about it soon. It's a magnificent film.

I feel the same about short cuts. I was fully expecting to love it, on two accounts, first that Raymond Carver is my favorite author, and second that the film was purportedly a great influence on P.T. (the man) Anderson, especially with regards to form. For the latter, I did find the movie interesting. But it was a poor interpretation of Carver's stories. Not just that he does different things with them, as he has every right to do, but that he tries to take them places the content simply will not go. All of the magic of Carver's simple tales is lost when Altman tries to force coherency and some glorious interconnection onto them. That is a fine thing to do, as Magnolia shows, but it was clearly a mistake to try to make such a symphony out of Carver's echoes.

Another category would be: "One movie character for whom you'd turn gay". The best thing about this category is that I could choose Cate Blanchett's Bob Dylan! Confusing, eh?
