The Atheist’s Bible
In the past couple years, atheism has gone mainstream. Atheism was once represented by the likes of Friedrich Nietzsche, Voltaire, Bertrand Russell, and George Bernard Shaw. More recently, however, we’ve seen the publication of Breaking the Spell by Daniel Dennett, The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins, Letters to a Christian Nation by Sam Harris, and God Is Not Great by Christopher Hitchens. The last of these even debuted at #1 on the NY Times bestseller list.
Now, to top it all off, we have The Atheist’s Bible by Joan Konner. The book is apparently filled with pithy quotes that mock the Bible, criticize the clergy and church history, attack the rational foundations for belief, and pit science against faith. The book does not, of course, offer any evaluation of the justifiability of these statements; it simply presents them at face value.
(Little known fact, G. K. Chesterton debated the famous atheist Clarence Darrow of Scopes Trial fame in January 1931 on the topic of Genesis and creation.)
